2024 Fluevog Artist Grant Winner: Murugi Thande

The Fluevog Artist Grant is a $10,000 fund designed to support the creative growth and development of up-and-coming talent within our community of Fluevogers. Our recipient this year, Murugi Thande, is a Kenyan-American multidisciplinary visual artist, specializing in photography and filmmaking at the intersection of documentary, street, and photojournalism.

Based in Washington, DC, Murugi plans to use her artist grant winnings to travel to Kenya to complete her ongoing project called “Under the Kenyan Sun: Memories Shaped in Nakuru” — a visual narrative exploring Nakuru, the vibrant town that shaped her mother’s memories.

.

Murugi intends to expand the project beyond a photo series by integrating large format, 35mm, polaroid, and mixed media elements including handwritten notes, and ultimately showcasing the project in a gallery featuring fine prints, darkroom prints, and diptychs. Murugi also hopes to one day create a photography book of her work.

Congratulations Murugi! We’re so excited to see your completed project!
